The estate's vineyards
The Hôpital Pourtalès vineyards are terraced and almost in one piece, covering 12 hectares in the Entre-deux-Lacs region. The entire vineyard has been certified organic since 01.01.2021.
With its sheltered, sunken position and abundant sunshine, this corner of the world is ideally suited to producing expressive white and red wines.
History of the estate
It would seem that the Entre-deux-Lacs region was already a wine-growing area in Roman times. What is more certain is that in the twelfth century, the Benedictine monks of the Holy Cross cloister in Troub, Emmental - which depended on the Abbey of Sankt Blasien in the Black Forest - planted the first vines in Cressier.
The Troub cellars
Past the door bearing the Pourtalès family coat of arms, a staircase leads down to the venerable monastic cellars, with their ceilings formed of joists supported by wooden pillars. Time has stood still here to such an extent that you can almost make out the cassocked shadows of the Troub monks who first walked these underground spaces.
